Our Story

The Life for Koori Kids network of support for children and their families was established by Ailsa Gillett and a few volunteers in 2001.

Ailsa, with the support of Elders in the local Aboriginal community and the Jesuit community at St Canice’s Church Kings Cross, recognised a significant lack of educational, medical and welfare support for inner city families of largely Aboriginal heritage.

The marginalisation of this community, now spread across Sydney from Redfern to Marrickville, hindered the educational and personal development of youth and encouraged a cycle of hardship.

Her vision was to create a local, community-based organisation that was flexible and responsive to the needs of the community and would support children overcome challenges and encourage them in their educational endeavours.
